Because we're giving a lot!
Our names are Julian, Jon, Lawrence and Stephen. We are four adults with learning difficulties who live at Ravenswood Village in Berkshire. Ravenswood cares for 160 people like us with special needs. We can do lots of things that you can, but because we have learning difficulties it’s much harder for us and we need some support. The village gives us the opportunity to develop our potential in a safe and caring environment.

There are other adults at the village who have profound and multiple learning disabilities. They have physical and sensory problems as well as learning difficulties. This might be from a genetic disorder such as Down’s Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy or from illness or trauma such as a car accident. It could happen to anyone and the result is that throughout their lives, they will need 24 hour care.

In order to meet their needs Ravenswood has committed to build a new 16-bed residential unit for them. This will cost over £2.5 million and we have pledged our support to raise £100,000 towards buying the right equipment to give those using the unit the very best quality of life. How are we going to achieve this?

On June 11th we will set off to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats - a distance of 1,017 miles. This is a massive challenge for us! We can’t do this alone, so we will be riding tandem with a carer, Nigel Trumper, on the front. We will also be supported by two other carers Michelle Bass and Nick Abbott. The whole project has been arranged by Charles Barnett and Lynne Gilbert, who will be riding the entire route with us. They have been volunteers at Ravenswood for many years and are funding all the associated expenses of the ride so that every pound raised will go straight to this project.
